Description

Badge of the British Order of Merit, instituted in 1902 by King Edward VII and awarded to M.R James in 1930. The insignia comprises a red enamelled cross patée with blue enamel borders, surmounted by the Imperial State Crown and suspended from a crimson and blue moiré silk neck ribbon. At the centre is a blue enamel medallion inscribed 'FOR MERIT' in gold lettering, encircled by a green enamel laurel wreath
