THE PERSONAL BADGE OF MARQUESS WELLESLEY
A plaster relief of the badge incorporating besides the Garter, the Huma bird and motto:
"Super Indos Protulit Imperium"
which he presumably adopted when he was Governor - General of India, although it is not recorded.
The huma bird, believed to be of auspicious nature by the ancient Persians, was represented in gold on the canopy of the throne of the Sultan of Mysore which formed part of the presentation of oriental royal trophies sent to George III in 1799 by Wellesley. Furthermore, a huma (a form of small eagle or vulture) made its nest in the garden of the house where Wellesley lodged in Madras and was said by the natives to bring him good luck at war.
