History and association
From research conducted by donor:
H. Barker - Henry Alwyn Barker (1898-1966), born in Alexandria,
Egypt, May 13, 1898. Son of Henry Edward Barker (1872-1942)
and Emmeline Mary Cornish Barker (1873-1953); Brother of
Beryl Alice Barker (1902-1988) and Emmeline Barker. He married
Ida Sybil Cumberbatch (1895-1946) on October 1, 1921, who had
son Henry Michael Barker (1923-1999) and daughter Mary
Helene Barker (1926-1951).
He served in the Rifle Brigade (Appendices I and II), and went to
work for the family shipping company, Barker and Company,
where he arrived general director. In 1956, the Barker 'empire'
broke up: with the Nasser presidency in Egypt, the Suez Canal
and foreign companies were nationalized and foreigners assets
confiscated. With low money they were able to get out of
Alexandria, they stopped in Venice at the home of Countess
Camilla Maggi (a distant cousin). The English State negotiated
with the Egyptian state the compensations, but these only arrived two decades later. In 1957 he
received the Order of the British Empire (annex III) and came to live in Portugal, more concretely,
in Estoril (annex IV). Perhaps it is this connection that led us to find the trophy at a fair in the
region of Lisbon in 2017.
