Label attached reads, "Nail taken from Eton College Chapel when it was restored - at the east end. Given by Beatrice Janet Carter to Eton College in 1942."
Carter was the daughter of William Adolphus Carter (1815 - 1901). The Carters are a well known Eton family. Rev. William Adolphus Carter taught Classics from 1839 to 1857. From 1857 to 1864, he held the position of Lower Master, and was then a Fellow from 1864 to 1901.
