'The Eckstein Collection of Model Elephants
Sir Bernard Eckstein, Bt., 1894-1948, was at Eton from 1908-1913 in Mr. Hare's House before going up to Trinity College, Oxford. He later served as a Captain with the East Surrey Regiment in WWI. He became a Director of the Kassala Cotton Co., Sudan Plantations Syndicate and Sudan Salt Ltd. and succeeded to his father's baronetcy in 1930. Having no children, he left his model elephants to the College in 1948. The collection consisted of 162 elephants, but now only 156 remain, notable for the range of materials from which they are made. They include models of both African Elephants (with relatively large ears) and Asian Elephants (with smaller ears).'
