Fucus tenax was described by Turner, D. (1806). In the paper Turner reports that Sir Joseph Banks sent him the specimens 'some time since'.
Our specimens clearly indicate Sir Joseph Banks, China and the initials 'DT' (for Dawson Turner).
They do not appear to match exactly the illustration in Turner (1806) which is the iconotype for this species, but they do have a strong claim to be considered type specimens nevertheless.
The species is now considered to be a taxonomic synonym of Gloiopeltis tenax (Turner) Decaisne.
