'Brazilian Coral-Tree
This painting, one of a number of illustrations that were found in the Herbarium, depicts Erythrina corallodendrum. It dates from 1804 and is a drawing of a garden specimen growing in Santa Martha, Lisbon. The artist is thought to be Sir Thomas Gage FLS (1781 – 1820) who lived at Hengrave Hall in Suffolk. He was a well-known lichenologist. See if you can find his initials ‘TG’ at the bottom left.
There are about 130 species of coral trees, many of them a bright red colour (erythros in Greek means red). They are sometimes called flame trees and they are found in tropical and sub-tropical regions around the world. They can be very popular with hummingbirds and other nectar feeding birds. The coastal coral tree (E. caffra) is the official city tree of Los Angeles, California. '
Please note the two images are of a single sheet
