LT.-COL. S. G. SHEPPARD, D.S.O., OF THe HAM, WANTAGE.
Gurney Sheppard was at Mr. Dalton's House from 1879 to 1882. After leaving Eton, he joined the Hertfordshire Yeomanry and served in that force as Second Lieut. through the S. African War, gaining the D.S.O. and a Hon. Lieutenancy in the Army. On the outbreak of the present war he was given the command of his Yeomanry, with which he went in due course to Gallipoli, where he was killed in action on August 22. He had an extraordinary influence over his men. As another officer writes: " He always seemed to appeal to the best in every one, a great deal, I believe, because such a thorough good sort,' he could never believe that others were not the same." A noted rider in the hunting-field and in cross-country races, he knew no fear, and his last words, as he lay dying, were: "Go on, the Herts, go on, the Herts.'
