Ownership inscription on t.p. of first work in volume: "Thomas godwyn", 1517-1590, Bishop of Bath and Wells. One of several books donated to Eton by John Reynolds from Godwin's library. ECL holds another copy of Dioscorides owned by Godwin (at Fb.5.17) - according to the ODNB, Godwin practiced medicine to support his family during the reign of Mary I.
Mid-16th century English dark brown leather; blind tooled frames composed of heads in medallions (see Oldham, English blind-stamped bookbindings, no. 805 and Oldham, Shrewsbury School library bindings, pp. 6-7) and triple fillet; remains of leather clasps with brass nails; wooden boards; blind tooled spine with triple fillet and single fillet on raised bands; red morocco spine label with gold tooled letters; four raised bands; some damage by woodworm.
