In the preface to v.1 the author refers to his decision, following the publication of his Armenian dictionaries for the French and Italian languages, to work on an English-Armenian Dictionary for the use of "the Armenian subjects of his Britannic majesty in the East Indies ... In imitation of D[octor]. Johnson we have prefixed to this volume for the benefit of Armenian students an accurate abridgment of English grammar".
