Provenance
[Copy 1] Ms. inscription presenting this leaving book to Thomas Lloyd from Lindergreen on July 26th 1792. Ms. inscription presenting the book to 'John' from Fred Lloyd, the great-grandson of Thomas Lloyd, on 26th July 1934. Ms. inscription recording the purchase in 2001 and stating that Fred Lloyd was an actor, and that this book is an example of one of the earliest leaving books and contains the works of Gray.
Provenance
[Copy 2] From the library at Shottesbrooke Park. Engraved armorial bookplate of Oswald Smith and inscribed as Eton leaving book from Percy Bysshe Shelley (not in Shelley's hand) on front free-endpaper: "Oswald Smith the gift of P. B. Shelley. Eton Coll. Aug. 1810.".
Binding
[Copy 1] 18th century brown leather; gilt devices creating frame; five raised bands; rebound with dark brown leather; flower devices and title stamped in gold on spine.
Binding
[Copy 2] 19th century diced russia calf; gilt- and blind-tooled borders; spine rebacked in gold-tooled 20th century calf; marbled edges to match the endpapers.
Copy-specific note
[Copy 1] Loosely inserted extract from a sales catalogue, listing an inscribed copy of the 6th edition of Gray's 'An elegy written in a country church yard' (R. Dodsley, 1752) apparently the only copy inscribed by the author; ms. inscription beside the entry suggests it is the recipient's writing, not Gray's.
Copy-specific note
[Copy 2] Loosely inserted reproduction of engraving signed "J. S. Müller sc." and note on stationery headed "Lord Lieutenant", Shottesbrooke Park with extract referring to Shelley from Swinburne's "Ode for the 450th anniversary of the foundation of [Eton College], A.D. 1891".
