Written for the Chancellor's Medal for English verse at the University of Cambridge, 1843, by H. J. S. Maine. The prize was won by William Johnson Cory, by a casting vote. Armorial bookplate of Lord Esher, i.e. Reginald Baliol Esher, 2nd Viscount Esher (1852-1930), to whom it was given by William Johnson Cory who identifies the author in ms. at the end.
Bound at end is an undated leaf (written after Maine's death in 1888) from an ALS from William (Johnson) Cory to Lord Esher, with ms. note on facing blank leaf: "The poem was, in point of fact, enclosed and given to me. E. [i.e. Esher]".
Inscribed on front free-endpaper to Sir Henry Jackson by "Esher", i.e. Oliver Brett, August 1961, and with loosely inserted ALS from Esher to Sir Henry dated 14 August 1961 presenting the volume from the library at Watlington where he was looking for a copy of Cory's prize poem.
Loosely inserted ALS from Sir Henry Jackson to John Carter dated Dorchester, 21 August 1961, presenting the volume on loan with reversion on Sir Henry's death.
Addition in pencil to presentation inscription to Sir Henry Jackson: "and lent, August 1961, to John Carter", with note in his hand: "I suppose it was printed in 1843 or 1844. W.J. [Cory] gave this copy to Reginald Brett, his pupil".
