Ionica.
London : Smith, Elder and Co., 65, Cornhill, 1858.
iv, 116 p. ; 18 cm.
Anonymous. By William Johnson Cory.
Printer's imprint of Smith, Elder & Co. on p. 116.
500 copies printed; 138 unsold copies in sheets were sent to the author in April 1872; after his death some of these copies were bought by the bookseller James Bain and bound for sale with copies of Ionica II (Cambridge, 1877). See John Carter, Hand-list, pp. 73-74.
Carter lists 3 binding variants of "Ionica": (a) Sage green morocco-grained cloth with gilt spine title "Ionica", gilt fleurons and gilt bands at head and foot, blind triple lined border on sides; (b) Sage green fine-ribbed cloth with identical blocking and lettering; (c) Grass green fine-ribbed cloth with identical blocking and lettering except that there is a full point after the title, and binder's ticket of Westleys & Co. Additionally, copies found in blue-grey paper boards bound with Ionica II are probably copies bought up after Cory's death by James Bain.
A second collection was printed for private circulation in 1877 as "Ionica II", and a collected edition was published in 1891.

[Copy 7] Three items tipped in, with note in Shane Leslie's hand "given to me by the Cornish family": (1) undated ALS from Cory to [Francis Warre] Cornish on Horace, with extensive postscript "partly for Margaret" ; (2) black and white postcard reproducing portrait of Cory by Charles Furse ; (3) postcard from Cory to Cornish, postmarked "Windsor MR28 87". Additional tipped-in material in Leslie's hand: verses (10 lines) with note "unpublished" ; biographical note on Cory enclosing small black and white photograph of the stair leading to College Chapel/Election Hall, with inscription to an unnamed recipient on verso.
[Copy 8] 6 pages of autograph verses by Cory on endpapers, dated Torquay, December 31, 1862; November 25, 1866, and The Hague-Scheveningen omnibus, August 12, 1859. Pencil note in Carter's hand suggesting that the verses were written on the endpapers of a cloth copy which was afterwards bound as the first volume of a set with a copy of "Ionica II" (ECL copy 1).
[Copy 9] Bound with a copy of Ionica II (ECL copy 3). Bookseller's biographical note on Laura Lyttelton née Tennant.
[Copy 10] Bound with a copy of Ionica II (ECL copy 4). 10 pages of autograph verses by Cory on endpapers, one dated 1870, and tipped-in ALS (4 pp.) from Cory to Prothero dated 8 February 1877, returning the newly bound book to Prothero having "written on most of the spare leaves". Loosely inserted ALS on headed stationery from the bookseller James Bain to Geoffrey Madan, dated 21 July 1926, comparing different editions of the work.
[Copy 11] Bound with a copy of Ionica II (ECL copy 5). Extensive annotations which according to a note on the endleaf are all in Cory's hand except where bracketed and initialled CDRW. This attribution is questioned in an undated, unsigned typescript note suggesting that all the notes are "in the hand of C. D. 'Chatty' Williamson" and that he "would appear to have copied these notes from another copy". On two leaves of blue paper and endleaves are 7 pp. of ms. verses possibly in Cory's hand but possibly transcribed, with dates between 1870 and 1888. Loosely inserted clipping from the Times, 30 April 1936, on 'Housman the poet'.
[Copy 12] Bound with a copy of Ionica II (ECL copy 6). Annotation in pencil recording sale of a similar copy in May 1891 and brief biographical note. Loosely inserted extracts from obituaries of the author from the Athenaeum and Literary world.
