The whole book of psalms: collected into English metre, / by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and others, conferred with the Hebrew. Set forth and allowed to be sung in all churches, of all the people together, before and after morning and evening prayer, and also before and after sermons; and moreover in private houses for their godly solace and comfort, laying apart all ungodly songs and ballads, which tend only to the nourishing of vice, and corrupting of youth.

Provenance

Belonged to Thomas Gray (1716-1771), Old Etonian and poet. Includes annotations in Gray's hand in the Bible bound with this set of the Psalms.

Provenance

Bequeathed by Gray to William Mason (1725-1797). Mason either gave or bequeathed it to Christpher Alderson (1737-1814) who succeeded Mason as Rector of Aston, Yorkshire, having previously been his curate.

Provenance

Inherited by Christopher Alderson's son Jonathan, who recorded the provenance on the flyleaf. Thence by unbroken descent until sold by the family in 2018.

Contemporary English black morocco; gold tooled concentric frames of double and triple fillets and chain roll; cornerpieces and triangular ornaments of arabesques; gold tooled flower and sprig roll on board edges and squares; gold tooled decoration on spine, including acorn, arabesque and dot tools; gold tooled title; gilt edges; traces of red silk book markers.
