Note

The plates are numbered as follows (all are double-page, except the portraits and where noted): Volume 1: the directions to the binder assign the numbering 1-7, 6-44 to the plates, while the plates themselves are numbered [1-4] 5 [6-7], VI-XLIV. -- Volume 2: the directions to the binder assign the numbers 1-45 to the maps, but omit the frontispiece and title-plate; the maps themselves are numbered [1] II-VII 8 IX-XLV; plate XXXXII is singe-page, and XXXIIX and XL are folded -- Volume 3: there are no directions to the binder, but the frontispiece is unnumbered and the maps are numbered I-XLVII. -- Volume 4: there are no directions to the binder, but the frontispiece and title-plate are unnumbered and the maps are numbered I-VIII XI [sic] X-XLI; plate XXVI is single-page.

Originally offered to subscribers as prospective work in 11 volumes of which only four were published.

Volume 2 has an added intaglio title-page reading "The English atlas volume 2 tome 1"; both title-pages to volume 2 are dated 1681. Volume 3 is dated 1683. Volume 4 has an added intaglio title-page reading "The English atlas volume 4" and is dated 1682.

Each volume was issued with a frontispiece portrait. That in volume 1 is signed "R. White sculpsit."; that in volume 2 is signed "Iohn Baptist Caspers pinxit. Ed: Davis sculpsit."; that in volume 3 is signed "P. Vandrebanc Sculp."; that in volume 4 is signed "D. Loggan Sculp.".

Note

The title-pages are printed in red and black and bear an intaglio vignette of Minerva.
