MS 38
Sermones, etc. manuscript
Title in M. R. James catalogue: S. Bernardi Homiliae, etc.
England, between ca. 1125 and ca. 1175.
1 volume (iii, 215, ii leaves) : parchment ; 28.5 x 19.3 cm.
A collection of sermons and short pieces ascribed to St Bernard, Clairvaux Abbey or Rievaulx Abbey; also sermons ascribed to Robert Pulleyn, Hugh of St Victor, St Augustine and others.
[1] ff. 1-136v: Eighty-four sermons and short pieces (mostly extracts only from the sermons of St Bernard), the first 78 for the church year from Advent, temporale and sanctorale, in one series. The majority are ascribed by initials or other abbreviations in red in the margins to Abbas Clarevallensis or Bernardus Abbas Clarevallensis or Abbas Rievallensis. Nearly the same collection in a different order is in Jesus College, Oxford, MS 6, and Lambeth Palace, MS 497. The pieces are numbered in the margins and mostly listed on f. iii (recto and verso) in a 15th-century hand, probably Robert Elyot's; the numbering goes wrong after 56. See Ker for the occasions, ascriptions and incipits with a key to the order in the Jesus manuscript.
[2] ff. 136v-151v: Five sermons ascribed to Robert Pulleyn, nos. 16-19, 2 in the list of Pulleyn's sermons by F. Courtney in Analecta Gregoriana 44 (1954), pp. 33-35. All five are in Lambeth Palace MS 497, the first four in the same order as here.
[3] f. 151v: Extract from Hugh of St Victor on Ecclesiastes, homily 16.
[4] ff. 152-154v: St Augustine, Liber de quatuor virtutibus charitatis.
[5] ff. 154v-162: St Augustine, De conflictu vitiorum et virtutum, here attributed to 'beati pape leonis', presumably Pope Leo IX.
[6] ff. 162-168: Two further sermons ascribed to Robert Pulley, nos. 5 and 4 in F. Courtney's list above.
[7] ff. 168-203v: Hugh of St Victor on Lamentations.
[8] ff. 203v-210v: Drogo, Meditatio in Passionem et Resurrectionem Domini.
[9] ff. 210v-212v: Five short sections of homilies or extracts, unattributed.
[10] ff. 212v-214: Sermon by Robert Pulleyn, unattributed; no. 11 in F. Courtney's list.
[11] ff. 214v-215r: 'De superedificantibus lignum fenum stipulam', attributed to 'A.C.' [Abbas Clarevallensis]; printed in Opera Bernardi, Paris, 1517m f. 90v.
Written space: 225 x 140 mm.
Two columns of 38 lines.
Ruled with pencil.
Pricks in both margins of quire 2 (only, ?) to guide ruling; of the ruled lines, 1, 3, 35, 37, 38 are usually extended into the margins.
Collation: 1⁸ wants 1 (blank?) 2-27⁸.
Quires numbered at the end.
Well written, with 'line' punctuation in the curly form found in Cirencester manuscripts on ff. 84v, 85, where the hand is perhaps different from that elsewhere. See N.R. Ker, English manuscripts in the century after the Norman conquest, p. 47 and pl. 20a,b.
Initials.
Secundo folio: Et hec quidem.
Rebound at Eton around 1715.
Written in England, perhaps in the Gloucestershire region, to judge from the script.
Two pledging entries on f. 215v; see provenance notes below.
On the evidence of inscriptions in the hand of Robert Elyot, at Eton by 1500.
Former Eton shelfmark: Bk.4.2.
