Administrative / Biographical history
Anthony Morris Storer (1746-1799) was at Eton from 1760-1764 before going to Corpus Christi, Cambridge. He was MP for Carlisle 1774-1780, and Morpeth 1780-1784, a Commissioner of the Board of Trade, and in 1783 Secretary of the Legation in Paris. A friend of Horace Walpole, he was a well-known collector and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He left his library and prints to Eton. It included nearly 3000 books (34 incunabula among them), with an emphasis on Greek and Latin classics, Italian literature, and early English plays including three First Folios of Shakespeare. The collection is also strong in Walpole works.
