Administrative / Biographical history
The Brewhouse was converted into five small galleries on three floors as the first place of exhibition for some of the many artistic treasures of Eton. There had been an exhibition in 1947 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the foundation of the College, but the new venture owed most to the vision and energy of Sir Geoffrey Agnew who advised the College on artistic matters for many years. The newly completed gallery was opened by the Marquis of Salisbury in 1969.
Concerns over environmental conditions led to the closure of the gallery in 2006.
