Papers of Neil Flanagan
Series
Neil Flanagan was appointed Editor of the Register of Old Etonians in 1988. The last printed volume produced by the Old Etonian Association had appeared in 1922 and covered only those in the school in 1919. Some work had been done since but it was clear that the time had come to computerise the register and bring it up to date. Preparations for the 1990 celebrations emphasised the many errors in the OEA's current membership and address list and he therefore became involved in introducing new technology to improve efficiency in the future (and incidentally enable them to organise their party). Subsequently he produced an updated address list for distribution to members and retained an oversight of this although his work on the Register was funded by the College rather than the OEA itself.
The College made increasing use of his computer expertise, at first on an informal basis but from 1995 recognising him as in effect systems adviser for non-School computing. From the beginning he assisted the College Library and Collections generally not only in a computerisation programme but also in the production of captions and catalogues for exhibitions and in the day-to-day running of their machines and software.
