Continuation of holiday; delayed by soldiers' target practice; Weymouth, with visit to theatre and to Portland Bill (new Governor's house, quarries); told that on the island most brides are pregnant; acknowledged by the Royal family at the theatre; visit to cavalry camp; 'a long conference' with their majesties as they embarked but quizzed on his wig; talk with Duke of Cumberland at the assembly rooms; Milton Abbey; Wilton House, being altered by Wyatt; Stonehenge, where G. attempted to chip off a piece of stone but could only obtain lichen; Amesbury, where house very neglected; Longford Castle, containing Claude pictures superior to those at Fonthill and those purchased recently by Angerstein, and also undergoing alterations; does duty at Ellingham and dines with two old Etonians, Colonel Anstey and his brother; Cuffnalls with George Rose, who says Dr Dupre has applied to him to procure the School for his son; PLACE: Star Inn, Southampton
