Visited the British Gallery; picture by Ingalton of Eton generally approved of. Shells; purchase of books and visit to Dr Leach. Viewed the Elgin marbles: 'they are in truth a noble debris'. Describes marriage of Colonel Hervey to Miss Caton at Apsley House following Catholic ceremony; lists those present and describes the Pattersons. Duke of Wellington determined to send his sons to Eton and asked him to recommend a tutor, who must be an Etonian; reminded him of his promise of giving me his picture.
