Suffolk has died since his release from prison; will not get any of the £400 he is owed. Anne (his niece) wants him to obtain a position for her son through the Bishop of Australia but any interest he has with him has been used by his recommendation of Mr Gould. Can obtain a nomination to College for Arthur Ashfield but 'whether it may be expedient to expose him to the unpleasant situation of a lower colleger when there seems to be a decided unwillingness to enter them at an early age may be a serious consideration'. Expenses of an Oppidan deter early entrance. Edmund [sic] should be fit for Upper School at ten, be able to compose his verses from Sense, and know Greek Grammar with exception of Syntax. Debatable if he should come as late as 11; if he can be placed high in the first instance his abilities may allow him to outstrip the competition. May be doubtful if hazards outweigh advantages of final success; average succession to King's is fewer than four per annum. Wrongly annotated June.
