Administrative / Biographical history

In the minutes of the Historic Buildings Inspectorate held on the 3rd June 2003, the composition of the Inspectorate was stated as ‘being a Master, an external adviser, the Buildings Bursar and under the chairmanship of the Vice Provost. The remit of the Committee would be to consider the condition of Eton's historic buildings, together with the standard of repair and appropriateness of any improvement works. For these purposes the term historic buildings would refer to those buildings to the east of Eton High Street and bordered by Weston's Yard, Head Master's Yard, Fellows' Eyot, Kitchen Close and the Church Yard. The Wall, College Field, Fellows' Eyot and Long Walk are also included, as are the Memorial Buildings, together with the Burning Bush and Lower Chapel. Where appropriate the term historic buildings would also include any associated paving, railings, sculpture, walls, landscaping, gardens and trees which form the setting of the historic buildings. The Keeper of Fine and Decorative Art joined the committee in 2009. The Provost joined the committee in 2011. The Director of Collections joined in 2016.

From 2012, the Inspectorate reported to the Heritage Committee, a sub-committee of the Provost and Fellows. In 2017 it was renamed ‘Heritage Committee: Historic Buildings’ and was chaired by the Provost. In attendance were the Vice-Provost, nominated Fellows, the Director of Collections, the Keeper of Fine and Decorative Art, the Buildings Director and the Legal Clerk to the Provost and Fellows.
