Title
Provost: Letter to Hugh Cecil, Provost, from Matthew Hill, Assistant Master
Level
Item
Date
October 1938 - November 1938
Content description
Asks for the reform of school dress [uniform] on the grounds that it is out of date, expensive (anything adding to the expense of a public school education encourages the upper middle classes to limit their families), unhygienic, ugly, uncomfortable, accentuates class division. Would like to see boys in shorts and open necked shirts during the week and as on Fourth of June on Sundays 'but I fear this would be impracticable on the score of expense'. Provost replies that there is now a distinction between formal dress and what they wear 'at play'. Agrees it is ugly - 'trousers are a foolish garment - but it is becoming as picturesquely archaic as the dress of Christ's Hospital. Second letter stating that the Governing Body sees no need for a change
