Provost: Letter to Sir Shane Leslie, 3rd Baronet, from Hugh Cecil, Provost

Earnestly hopes he will not ask for canonisation of Henry VI. Those in England in communion with the See of Rome are schismatics and the Bishop of Rome has no jurisdiction or power to canonise here and if it were done he (Cecil) would treat it as a nullity. Would be distressing to Catholic Etonians in general and bad for relations between churches. Leslie: proper opening of proceedings to canonise Henry VI would be a joint letter from the Provosts of Eton and King's. His letter to The Times was partly to call attention to publication of ms. on Henry's miracles and he hoped it would be a means of co-operation between the churches. Will abide by Provost's wish
