Offers £1000 to endow annual lecture like Romanes Lecture at Oxford. Elliott: glad his grandson is entered for Gladstone's as he is first-rate'. Birley: great waste of money. First Hundred lectures hard enough to fill. Cannot compete with Political or Scientific Societies who get excellent speakers. Only leaves art or general topics. 'I cannot help remembering that frightful lecture on health and Happiness or something like that which Rex Fripp let us in for.' Would prefer it to endow the Science Newcastle he wants to start.
