Various complaints about aspects of Eton life with which he is unhappy. Masters interfere too much in running of games, encourage boys to sneak, get them to help enforce school rules (eg Pop tanning a boy for smoking), boys sit up working till the early hours because of the moderate teaching, house masters are not what they were, a proportion of vacancies should be kept for Old Etonians' sons, boys should be taught accountancy, racquets are too expensive. Birley indignant that he wrote directly to Provost without going to the Head Master first. Pilkington (after meeting) now feels happy that things at Eton are in good hands
