Surprised to see that the Provost had been lecturing at Sedbergh. Thinks it a mistake to 'saddle the minds of teenage boys with consciences, responsibilities obligations' just because they are at public school. Not much privilege in being beaten or being sent away from home and having to keep to rules. What the boys give is their youth and hope.
