Registrar: Corn letter books
Sub-series
1759 - 1888
162 volumes
These paper-covered volumes contain copies or summaries of the rent demands sent to tenants of the College estates or those liable for the payment of pensions. They thus provide a useful summary of lessees at any given date.
The prices of wheat, malt and sometimes mutton, used to calculate the money values of the corn etc forming part of the rent are usually shown and in 1799 a list of land tax payable has been added. Until 1790 there were separate books for Lady Day and Michaelmas demands, thereafter an annual book, and in 1868-1871 home rents (which included London property other than Chalcots) were in separate books.
Some volumes have notes of receipts, non-standard correspondence and rough calculations, and William Roberts (Bursar 1798-1818) sometimes initialled the entries. Towards the end of the series the work was taken over by the Bursar's Clerk.
