COLL REG 23
COLL REG 23
Registrar: Railways
Sub-series
1833 - 1871
These papers relate mainly to the Great Western line to Slough and the South Western line to Datchet, their subsequent extensions to Windsor, and the College's attempts to keep them away from Eton. They include material on a number of proposals which did not succeed, including the Windsor, Slough and Staines atmospheric railway. There are also notices relating to College estates elsewhere, mainly dating to 1846, although any correspondence relating to negotiations with these companies must be sought in the estate records. The Registrar of the time, Thomas Batcheldor, was affected personally by some of the Windsor and Eton proposals, especially the South Western's, and some papers reflect his private rather than official capacity. He was also Chapter Clerk to the Dean and Canons of Windsor and there are a few items that should have been filed with their archives, reflecting no doubt a confusion in his office.
These records were at some point roughly sorted into two boxes, probably by Raymond South. One contained papers relating to the Windsor, Slough and Staines atmospheric railway (see COLL/REG/23/9) and one contained the rest. It has not always been possible to be sure that drafts and notes for parliamentary committee appearances have been assigned to the correct year or correct proposal. The divisions are artificial
