Level

Sub-series

Date

1833 - 1871

Content description

These papers relate mainly to the Great Western line to Slough and the South Western line to Datchet, their subsequent extensions to Windsor, and the College's attempts to keep them away from Eton. They include material on a number of proposals which did not succeed, including the Windsor, Slough and Staines atmospheric railway. There are also notices relating to College estates elsewhere, mainly dating to 1846, although any correspondence relating to negotiations with these companies must be sought in the estate records. The Registrar of the time, Thomas Batcheldor, was affected personally by some of the Windsor and Eton proposals, especially the South Western's, and some papers reflect his private rather than official capacity. He was also Chapter Clerk to the Dean and Canons of Windsor and there are a few items that should have been filed with their archives, reflecting no doubt a confusion in his office.
