Series
Elected a King's Scholar in 1788, he went on to King's in 1794. In 1801 he returned to Eton as an assistant master and from 1814 - 1829 was Lower Master. In 1829 he was elected a Fellow of Eton, and became Vice-Provost in 1857. From 1807 - 1830 he was Vicar of Chardstock, Dorset, from 1830 - 1833 Rector of Southmere, Norfolk, and from 1833 Vicar of Burnham.

Letters from Charles Kegan Paul on Essays and Reviews and church teaching in general, and papers relating to the death of Provost Hawtrey. A letter from Lord Combermere to him as Lower Master describes concern among parents, including the Duke of Newcastle, at a culture of drinking in the school and a relaxation of discipline
