Content description
Considerations concerning the present state of Eton School Occasion'd by the choice of a New Master. Written while Burton was a Fellow of Eton College. In Burton's hand.
Proceeding from an assumption that the 'state of the School' may be judged on the 'regulation of manners' and 'proficiency in Learning' it provides, Burton, concludes, 'on a general view of things', that 'the school is in a corrupt & degenerate state in both respects' - and as such, 'stands in need of some reformation'.
Contains a letter dated 1861 from George Williams (1814-1878) to John Taylor Coleridge (1790-1876). Williams encloses 'some Remarks on Eton School, by a former Scholar and Fellow of Corpus Christi. College Oxford: which will, I think amuse and interest you in connection with the present controversy'. He continues that 'it seems to be imperfect and probably was not published for reasons which may be gathered from page 4...a hornets' nest in the shape of assistants'. A reference to the review by the Public Schools Commission of the College, Williams notes that 'The M.S. was given me by peer Louis Shadwell.'
