Edward Smalbon, vicar, Compton Lodge, to (the bursar?). Hard to read, being torn and written in a shaky hand.
"Reverend Sir
I am bold to present these few lines unto you to request the favour from you that if you have a meet opportunity to lay open to that pious charitable learned and reverend gentleman Dr Allestree, Provost of Eaton Colledge, the state and condition of their vicarage of Long Compton, which parish is soe numerous in Quakers and more of Atheisticall lives that I have had but smale encouragment either in the people or .... for such persons make noe cure not conscience towards their minister ... byn and in such as disables me to strive for my owne and if I was truly paide the meanes is but smale, I cannot advance it to above £32 per annum; and that comes in but coldly ... if the reverend Provoste could prevaile with the Colledge to make some augmentation and addition, it cannot but oblige myself and all my successors to pray for the sowls of them. Though my weakness and age forewarne me of my end and I cannot long continue to officiate my cure, yet a supply would be a great comfort and encouragment unto me ..."
