Ellingham, Hampshire: Copy grant of messuage
Item
[12th century]
Copy of Grant in frankalmoign by Hugh de Godeshulle to the abbey of St Sauveur and the church of the Blessed Mary of Elingeham [Ellingham] of a messuage which Odo held in the vill of Lyndwda [Linwood], and 5 acres viz. 3 on Heringeshulla on the north and the half of Stodehulla on the west, with common in the pasture of Lyndwda, and the tithe of all his and his tenants' land there. The abbot and convent have admitted the said Hugh to their fraternity, and all the benefits of their house, and will have a weekly mass said in the church of Elingeham for the souls of his parents, and his and their names recited there every Sunday.
The variant readings appear as footnotes.
Seal, doubled tag with dark brown cloth wrapping, containing only fragments of a seal. A loose fragment, found in the box of deeds, of a natural colour wax seal, with green varnish, originally round about 45mm, probably belonged to this deed. Apparently equestrian.
