Inspeximus by G. (Guy 1241 - 1260) bishop of Bayeux and four abbots of the diocese of Countances of an agreement between William son of John de Herpetru and the abbey of St Sauveur le Vicomte in the Cotentin by which the said William, for the souls of his ancestors and the salvation of himself, his wife Matilda, and their children, granted the said abbey the church of St Margaret of Babbitona [Babington], and a virgate of land which Ernaldus the doctor held, and from his wood daily for the brothers dwelling there for their hearth a bundle of whatever wood they like save oak, and twenty pigs without pannage, and the tithe of the house wherever he or his lady shall be dwelling on his lands, of bread whether in corn or bread, of cheeses which they shall eat, of all provisions whether cooked or raw and of beer brewed in his house. The latter, to wit, so long as he shall have it of his own. And when he shall happen to [buy] he has granted the tenth penny (except drink) and all the oblation of his house as long as he stays in Babbiton. The abbey is to send there a monk priest and a secular priest, acceptable to god and the lord of the province, who, if they are acceptable are not be to removed without the assent of both. The agreement is such that if the said place can support more than one monk another is to be sent from the abbey. Let none presume to take away the relics which are in the church of St Margaret, viz. a rib of the said Virgin (St Margaret) and a rib of St Blaise and shoulder blade of St Cecilia, and the ornaments of the church, viz. a silver chasuble and two albs and three amices and one chasuble which are there, and all things which in addition are given to the said place. The place shall give the abbey only one mark silver yearly.

5) 44mm, chipped on left side. The abbot, staff in right hand, book in left.
