Content description

To the King's Most Excellent Majestee Charles the Second, by the grace of God king of Great Brittaine, France and Irelande, Defender of the faith, etc.
The humble petition of the inhabitants of Ellingham, Rockford, Blashford, Linwood and Highwood, etc.
Whereas the church of Ellingham, in the diocese of Winchester, adjoining to the New Forest, nigh the river of Aven, is an ancient church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the parish belonging thereunto being great, whose tythes and dues do amount to about £110 per annum, but the vicar (who takes all the paines) his livelyhood is but £16 per annum part whereof the College of Eton payes only 4 marks yearly, the rest ariseth in poore small tythes. The Colledge reapes all the other profits of corn and hay and gleab, the meanes belonging to the Viccar being so verry small, the viccaridg house is like to fall down, the minister and his family not able to subsist, the publick worship of God is like to be omitted there and the people to want the office and comfort of a minister; unlesse your Majestie vouchsafe to commande that out of the tythe corn and hay which the parishioners yearley pay to the said College som competent part thereof may be yearly allowed to the present minister for the maintenance of himselfe his wife and family.
Therefore we the parishioners, whose names are subscribed, with the rest freely consenting with us do most humbly beseech your Sacred Majesty, that like as you have most piously ordered that out of impropriations the Viccars shall have competent allowance that themselves and families may comfortably live, we do most humbly beseech your Majesty that out of the tythe corn and hay we do yearly pay, and have this yearly payed, there may be allowed and given to our present minister and to his successors such a liberall mainetenance as your Majesty shall think requisit.
And we your Majesties Loyall subjects shall ever pray, etc.
John Turner, Thomas Tipping, Hambris Colbern, William Osgod (church warden), Thomas Blake, [Hezekiah Brown] (Church warden), Thomas Hide, Henry Gibbs, Umphrey Coales, Christopher Coles, [Joseph Coles], Christian Withington vidua.
