Stratfield Saye, Hampshire: Notification of grant of hermitage

Notification by William de Stutevill to Jocelin, bishop of Salisbury, and all the faithful, that he has granted in frankelmoign to Godard, the recluse, and his successors the hermitage of St Leonard on the Loddon with all its appurtenances, together with firewood and hedging and quittance from pannage. And ratification of any future grants to the same or of whatever the grantee or his successors may acquire by the grace of god or by their industry. The land of St Leonard is as follows: from the water of the Loddon to the outer corner of the land which was of Yolfus and thence to the boundary of Sceprige from below the mere, and from the outer corner of the land of Yolfus below the road to the bank by his frith and the meadow in the corner of the frith.
And further, grant of a virgate of land at Stretfeld [Stratfield] which Adam Pohca held, that two masses may be celebrated there each week, one for the souls of his parents and ancestors and the other for the salvation of himself and his (heirs), saving the benefit of the church of Stratfeld from the said virgate and from the acres which his men have given or will give. Turchetil for his part has given the said hermitage two acres which lie in Erhelonde. Alexander has given three acres in Puriforlang next Chieldoc and half an acre which is called Wedhehelve and half the island which he had under Haiwud. Richard the Butler has given two acres in Vuewerthe, William Nuthec one acre Alangetherne.
Seal, round, 57mm, greenish wax with a brown varnish, on green and yellow silk cords. Worn at the sides. Equestrian.
