Newington, Kent: Letter concerning tithes
Item
7 April 1789
Henry Friend, curate, Newington, to the Provost, asking for what purpose the three quarters of wheat were left to the parish out of the rectorial tithes. “The reason of my being desirous of such information arises from the supposed abuse in the distribution of it, as not less than five bushels out of so small a quantity are claimed by five several persons by virtue of office. Now this strikes me not to be the intention of the donor, if being utterly inconsistent with the idea of charity to give so great a portion of it to some of the most substantial people of the parish.”
