Cottisford and Fringford, Oxfordshire: Letter concerning enclosure
Item
20 March 1810
R. Greenhill, Lincoln's Inn, to Rev. Mr Roberts. The reasons his father broke off the enclosure. " One of the last proposals Mr Cooke threw out (for in fact there was no end of them) was that my father should take a lease of him of the open field allotted to the rector at whatever might be the quality prices. Mr Cooke wished not to be burdend with the expenses of building etc. To this I positively objected on my father's behalf..." I therefore did think it necessary after full and mature deliberation to advise my father to make a stand and to put a determind, tho' I trust you will not think an unaccountable negative, upon any further negotiation with the rector". "I purposely abstain from stating more respecting my own opinion of the conduct of the rector in this matter, to whom alone the failure of the inclosure is be to attributed."
