Blakenham, Suffolk: Letter concerning negligence of steward
Item
29 July 1765
G. Emly, Monks Ely, near Hadleigh, to the Rev. Mr Cooke. Mr Edwards, the oldest copyhold tenant at Blakenham, has told him that Wake, the under tenant there, has again been cutting and imbezzling College timber. "He also told me your Steward, Mr Hymer, is very negligent, almost always drunk, and unfit for business, which too I had heard before. Though he was told of it by part of the Homage at the last court, he took no other notice either of the copyhold lands in Mr Acton's estate or in the glebe belonging to the Rectory of Baylham than by saying that's all free, that's all free." "... in all probability if you don't see to it you will lose a fine in the whole he says of near £20, if not the lands for ever. The said Mr Edwards has attended your court for 30 years, he says, and they always us'd to have a dinner and beer, but at the last court Mr Hymer did not let them eat or drink". "I wish you could find someone to send that understands these things, those you sent to hold a court there about 4 years ago were laugh'd at I remember for setting some thing at but £8 a year, and as knowing but little of what they were about". Recommends Mr Paske, attorney at Needham, as a suitable person to take Hymer's place. "If you please he and I will undertake to manage the whole of this affair at Blakenham for you, if you or any one from College will do us the favour to fix a day and meet us there."
