East Wretham, Norfolk: Letter of protest against fine
Item
16 August 1776
William Woodley, Eccles, to the Rev. Doctor Betham protesting against the sum demanded for the renewal of his lease. Properties have certainly gone up in value but "it is a known fact that all our improvements in Norfolk by marle are apt to wear out sooner or later and many of our farms will not admit of being improved a second time. You will please also to recollect when Mr Palmer took a view of the premises it was at a most favourable season for this county after a long continued rain and wet weather. Had he seen it in a dry season I am persuaded he wou'd have had a different opinion of it." He hopes therefore to "receive such treatment as I have reason to expect from Gentleman of such a liberal education and way of thinking..."
