Title
East Wretham, Norfolk: Letter of protest against fine
Level
Item
Date
6 May 1777
Content description
William Woodley, Eccles, to the Rev. Mr Betham. He is "not a little surpris'd to find you so inclin'd to misinterpret an Epithet in my last letter to you so much to my Disadvantage and so contrary to my real Meaning. Good Manners as well as sound Policy makes it highly improbable that I shou'd designedly let fall from my Pen any word or expression to give offence to a set of gentlemen with whom at this time I was negotiating a renewal of my lease; if I am not mistaken I have seen and heard the word enormous used synonymously for very extraordinary, huge, exceeding great, excessive large, out of Size, Rule or proportion; the Derivation of it from the preposition e and the Substantive Norma, with the whole Tenor of my letter to you...might have evinced my meaning to be nothing more than that I thought the next intended fine was greatly out of proportion to those heretofore paid."
