East Wretham, Norfolk: Draft letter concerning boundaries

Level

Item

Date

[c.1801]

Content description

Draft of William Roberts, Eton, to the Provost of King's. He has been to Wretham. "I found a charming house in possession of Sheriff's officers, and when I heard of Mr C's immense debts, and the great distresses he has brought upon his own family, I was the less surprised that he should pay no regard to property held under the two colleges." "Fences, landmarks, hedges and boundaries of every kind have not only been destroyed, but alter'd and removed apparently to mislead; of our common field lands and breakers, tho' our terrars and plans tell us the quantities, yet every boundary has been studiously removed, and we found an expanse of perhaps fourteen hundred acres of different properties blended together, and without a mark to distinguish." The property of King's College appears to be confused with Mr Colhoun's in an even worse manner. "It's our determination to ascertain our property, where is can be done, to make such exchanges of land where there be a difficulty of ascertaining as will be mose beneficial to our and Mr C's own estate and to take our quantity of Common field lands in one piece." "I hope and trust that we shall go hand in hand together."
