Content description

Grant to the Provost and College of Eton of a weekly market at Eton on Wednesday in a place to be assigned by the said Provost and College; and that no purveyors, buyers, takers or ministers of the King or any other magnate shall take anything in that market, or on the way to or from it, or make any prise there against the will and assent of the Provost and College or of the men coming to that market, upon pain of imprisonment of their bodies, to be carried out by the ministers of the said Provost and College in that market, such imprisonment to continue until they have made proper amends. The Provost and College to have cognisance of all pleas of trespasses, debts and other contracts arising in the said market, to be held in the court of the Provost and College before their steward or bailiff, to be appointed thereto, to the exclusion of any escheator, sheriff, steward, marshal of the marshalsey, coroner, clerk of the market or other minister of the King, so that all coming to the market, abiding there and returning from it, shall be quit of all arrests and vexations from the same for themselves and their goods. Witnesses: John, Cardinal, Archbishop of York and Chancellor, William, Bishop of Winchester, Thomas, Bishop of Bath and Wells, Henry, Duke of Exeter, Humfrey, Duke of Buckingham, Edmund, Duke of Somerset, Richard, Earl of Warwick, John [Talbot]Earl of Shrewsbury, John, Earl of Worcester, Treasurer, John, Viscount Beaumont, Henry, Viscount d'Eu, Sir Ralph Cromwell and Sir Ralph Botiller, knights. Given at Westminster, by the King.

Great Seal, green wax, slightly chipped at top right edge of reverse, on blue and red silk cords. Ornamental penwork on top line.
