Content description

Grant by John, abbot of the Benedictine monastery of the Blessed Mary of Grestein (in the diocese of Lisieux in Normandy), Gilbert Tassel, prior of the cloister, Robert Gueroult, sub-prior and almoner, Peter Poisson, precentor, John Seurie, sacristan, Walter le Steellier, succentor, Richard de Tieuvilla, bailiff, Giles Lenglois [cenelarius?], John Baudin and John Adam, priests, and John Bordel, deacon, all professed religious, representing the convent and chapter of the said monastery, or the manors of Creting [Creeting] and Blakenham, in the county of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich, to the Provost and College of Eton; for a considerable (notabili) sum of money paid by King Henry, founder of the said College. For a long time the property had been of doubtful value to the abbey, partly on account of the Wars and partly, even in peace time, owing to its distance, to ignorance of the language, to the difficult and dangerous crossing of the sea and to the other hazards of the journey. Should the grant, through any reason, not take effect the abbey undertakes to pay the said sum of money to the College within six months of its being asked for. The bishop of Lisieux has assented to the grant. Witnesses: Robert de Prestreval de Fastouvilla, Peter Poret de Triguevilla, John Fleury de Boullevilla, Richard le Herichie of St Ouen of Grestein, priests, rectors of parish churches or curates, and William de Prestreval, Bennet de Gaillon and Richard de Vinea, esquires.

Notarial marks and attestations of John de Tieuvilla and William Letyou, priests, of the diocese of Lisieux, and notaries.
