Thurlby, Lincolnshire: Letter concerning fine demanded
Item
17 December 1750
2 folios
Alice Minshull, Great Marlborow Street, to the Provost, being tenant of a farm at Thirlby complaining of the fine demanded for the renewal of her lease.
"This farm has too many sorry cottages upon it which are yearly very expensive, building being very dear there. The disorder among the cattle there has thrown the tenants greatly in arrears which I doubt will never be recovered; and the tithes due from Lady Cust's estate has for several years been about fifteen pounds per annum worse that is was formerly; that familiy insisting now on its being only subject to a modus in this affair but having no assistance from the College; a potent adversary to deal with, and so short a lease; and being by a fatal family experience taught the dreadful consequences of a Chancery suit to persons in our situation, we were forced to drop the suit with the Custs family. I doubt not but you gentlemen will please to take these circumstances, with me years, into your tender consideration..."
Seal, oval, 17 x 14mm, red wax, applied. A bearded profile.
