Counterpart of lease, by the Provost and College to William Byrde, of Wytney, co. Oxford, yeoman, of the site of the rectory or parsonage of Cogges, co. Oxford, with all lands pertaining thereto and all rents and pensions from the late suppressed abbeys of Evesham, Osney and St Frydeswydes in Oxford, and a fulling mill there. Excepting courts leets and the perquisites of the same, and all great trees, and one chamber with a little yard adjoying, which shall be the dwelling place of the chaplain or curate for the time being. From Michaelmas 1574 for 20 years. Rent 25 quarters of wheat at Lady day to be approved by the bursars, masters of the backhouse and baker of the College; and one boar at Christmas or 13s 4d. In default of the wheat, the lessee to supply its money equivalent. The lessee to find a priest to discharge the cure there, and bread, wine and wax for the services, and to repair the chancel and the priest's house and the rectory. The lessee to lodge and the provide horsemeat and man's meat for the lessors whenever they shall come to hold courts, for one day and one night. Within three years he is to make a terrar of all the glebe lands, and to renew the same every ten years. If the bishop of the diocese cause the lessors to find a vicar there the lease will become to no effect.

Seal, round, 15mm, red wax, a doubled tag. A bird with wings outstretched.
