Office copy of two extracts from records in the Treasury of the Receipt of the Exchequer, viz, from a bundle entitled Cartae et Scripta tangent' Ecclesias etc.
(1) Decree of the Prior of Merton, the official of the Archdeacon of Surrey and the Dean of Ewell, appointed by Pope Gregory IX, 22 March in the second year of his pontificate (1228) to hear a complaint by the Prior and Convent of Lewes, of the order of Cluny, that the abbot of Missenden and others in the diocese of Lincoln injure them in the matter of tythes, pensions, rents etc. The prioress and Convent of Clarus Rivus, rectors of the church of Mapledurham, were represented by the prior (? vicar) of Mapledurham, their proctor. The prior of Lewes claimed that from time immemorial he had received two parts of the greated and lesser tytes from the demesne of Hugh de Gurney in Mapledurham, sometime of the earldom of Warenne, except that of hay which was now witheld from him and which he claimed. The rectors ordered to restore the tythe of hay to the complainants. [Public record office. Exchequer T R Ancient deeds series A (E 40) no. 14958(2)].
(2) Statement by Roger, abbot of Reading (1158 - 1164) that he was present and saw when Nicholas, the cellarer of St Pancras, gave the tythe of Mapledurham, to wit two parts of the demesne, to Sir Ralph the clerk of Agi, for one mark silver, and Ralph received from Nicholas a chirograph relating thereto sealed with the seal of St Pancras. Witnesses: Simon Capellanus Noster, Hugo filius cancellarius, Edwardus de Bocherste, Hugo de Sancto Pancrazio, Duranus presbiter, magister Wido, Robertus Pincerna, Osbertus nepos ejus, Gauffredus senescallus, Gilbertus nepos prioris de Sancto Pancrazio, Willelmus nepos noster, Radulfus nepos, Richardus de Grenestedede. [E. 40 n. 14958 (1)].
Examined by Edward Fauconberge and John Lowe, deputy chamberlain, with a note of search fees.
