Content description

Transcript of a decree of the Prior of Merton, the official of the Archdeacon of Surrey and the Dean of Ewell, appointed by Pope Gregory IX, 22 March in the second year of his pontificate (1228) to hear a complaint by the Prior and Convent of Lewes, of the order of Cluny, that the abbot of Missenden and others in the diocese of Lincoln injure them in the matter of tythes, pensions, rents etc. The prioress and Convent of Clarus Rivus, rectors of the church of Mapledurham, were represented by the prior (? vicar) of Mapledurham, their proctor. The prior of Lewes claimed that from time immemorial he had received two parts of the greated and lesser tytes from the demesne of Hugh de Gurney in Mapledurham, sometime of the earldom of Warenne, except that of hay which was now witheld from him and which he claimed. The rectors ordered to restore the tythe of hay to the complainants. [Public record office. Exchequer T R Ancient deeds series A (E 40) no. 14958(2)]
[Entered in folio book p.70].
By William Day, vicar of Mapledurham.
