Content description
Brief on behalf of William Day, based on the depositions of witnesses, in his claim to all tythes in Mapledurham which are not lawfully discharged. Written in the first person with many marginalia in the hand of Day. His predecessor, Mr Matthews, who had been vicar for almost 60 years, had failed to assert his rights. He had "lived very poorly and barely" and "did accept of the inhabitance what they were willing to pay for their tythes". He "was conceived of his neighbours to be guiltie of some abuses for which hee might be putt out of his vicaridge. Therefore in that regard hee saide that if they spared him, hee would spare them in their tyth-hay".
